Abstract: Halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) are chemicals with properties similar to persistent organic pollutants (POPs),which have raised significant concerns during the past decades due to their environmental persistence,long-range transport and bioaccumulation in organism. They are ubiquitously found in marine environment worldwide, which pose a threat to the aquatic organisms. In this paper,we review available data on the contamination status of HFRs in the marine environment of China, including contamination levels, distribution and impact of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs),hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDs),decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and other non-PBDEs HFRs from various sample matrices, and the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of HFRs in marine environment were as well summarized. This paper also identified the remaining problems of HFRs research in China marine environment, such as lack of report on novel HFRs and limitations of study areas. Further research to improve future monitoring was recommended as well.
